R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey: Chemistry Level 1 is a grade 2–5 chemistry curriculum built atoms-first. Unit 2 introduces atoms and their parts. Unit 3 builds the periodic table. Every later concept - bonding, molecules, states of matter, chemical reactions, acids and bases, combustion - is grounded in atoms and electrons. The author’s TE introduction commits explicitly: Many of the concepts taught in this book are those usually reserved for high school. Young children can learn chemistry!

What Students Learn

The book is 7 units across 433 pages. Unit 1 introduces what chemistry is. Unit 2 (Starting Small) is the atomic foundation: students learn that atoms exist, that they are extremely small, that they move faster when heated, and what they are made of - protons, neutrons, electrons. They build marshmallow models of the first ten elements. Unit 3 introduces the periodic table: atomic numbers (= proton count), atomic mass (protons + neutrons), periods (= energy levels), groups (= same outer-shell electron count). Unit 4 tours selected groups element by element. Unit 5 covers bonding, molecular formulas, and electron-dot structures. Unit 6 grounds states of matter in molecular spacing and motion. Unit 7 closes with chemical reactions, acids and bases, pH, precipitation, and combustion. The architecture is non-arbitrary: atoms must come before molecules; molecules before matter; matter before reactions.

Models are pervasive: marshmallow atoms, gumdrop water molecules, electron-dot structures, personal periodic table. The Are Atoms Small? lab uses scented liquids in balloons to prove atomic size. The Do Atoms Move? lab uses food coloring at three temperatures. The pH lab uses red-cabbage indicator. Math is integrated: electron counting, molecular formulas, density, pH scale.

Deep by design - The author’s TE introduction names the design intent: Chemistry is the study of atoms, what they make, and how they interact. Since everything is made from atoms, the argument can be made that chemistry is the central science. Unfortunately, it is the science least likely to be taught before high school. The problem with that is that without an understanding of atoms and molecules, the rest of science is harder to understand. The structural feature is non-negotiable: Unit 2 must precede Units 3-7. Atoms come first.
