R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey: Biology Level 1 is a grade 2–5 biology curriculum that teaches all of its mechanism content - cells, DNA, photosynthesis, respiration, digestion, mutations, endosymbiosis - without any connection to atoms or molecules. Across 534 pages, the words atom and molecule do not appear a single time. The curriculum also contains a factual science error in its definition of autotroph: it states that plants make their own energy, which violates the first law of thermodynamics.

What Students Learn

The book is 28 chapters across 6 units. Unit 1 introduces biology with a mascot tardigrade. Unit 2 covers cell theory, DNA, chromosomes, genes, and inheritance - all at the cellular level, never the molecular level. Unit 3 is the comparative anatomy unit: students build a life-sized Model of Me while learning digestion, respiration, circulation, growth, response, movement, and reproduction. Unit 4 covers fossils, paleontology, and natural selection. Unit 5 covers ecosystems, food webs, biomes, and symbiosis. Unit 6 walks through the major taxa, building a phylogenetic tree. The author identifies cell theory, evolution, genetics, and organism as the foundations. Atoms and molecules are not on that list.

Practices

Practices: 92.9% (green tier). Six of seven practices PRESENT, one PARTIAL. Every lab has hypothesis/observations/conclusions structure. Models are foundational: tardigrade, cells, Model of Me, chromosome bracelet, phylogenetic tree. Real quantitative measurement (heart rate, breathing rate). Multi-generation natural selection simulation. Cookie-stratum paleontology dig. The strength of the practices makes the foundation problem worse, not better. Students are doing real science on top of a model of life with no molecular foundation and one factually incorrect definition.

What Would Change This Verdict

The curriculum must correct the factual error first. Plants make their own food (chemical energy storage molecules) using energy from sunlight would be correct. Closing the 100% gap means naming the entity: DNA is a molecule. Cells are made of molecules. Photosynthesis rearranges atoms. These are sentences that fit inside existing chapters. The author’s RSO Chemistry Level 1 demonstrates her design space already includes atoms; this book just doesn’t use them.
