Mystery Science Grade 1 "Lights & Sounds" scores Foundation 0%. This unit is shallow in a milder way than the Grade 4 energy unit. It has 2 LAE (Label-As-Explanation) map errors and zero factual errors. It does not assert a false ontology (no "energy is stuff"), but it leans on the word "vibration" as if naming it explains sound, without ever saying what vibrates as sound travels.
REI (reification): 0. Light and sound are never treated as a substance. No "sound travels through the air as stuff," no "light is carried." This is the unit\'s real strength and the sharp contrast with the Grade 4 energy unit.
LAE (label-as-explanation): 2. "We call something going back and forth a vibration. Different kinds of vibrations make different sounds." The vocabulary defines sound as "vibrations you can hear" and vibration as "movement back and forth," using the word as the explanation while the mechanism is missing: what vibrates as sound travels (air particles) is never named.
