This is the inertia lesson - Newton's First Law of Motion at K-2. The inertia content is descriptively correct: motionless things stay motionless, moving things keep moving, unless/until a force is applied. The lesson is rich with hands-on demos (ball-in-tray jerks, paper-under-glass yanks, bombardier dropping games) and connects inertia to everyday experiences (seat belts, hammers driving nails, dogs shaking off water, kicking mud from boots, the Earth orbiting the sun).

The verdict is Not Recommended because Part 2 (Relating Inertia to Energy) installs the substance framing inherited from C-1, C-3, and C-3A: "Things will not move unless energy is put into the system, and they will remain in motion unless/until energy is taken out of the system."

What Students Learn

The lesson is about 11 pages in two parts. Part 1 (Revealing the Principle of Inertia) uses Q&A and hands-on experience to derive the first law of motion. Apparent exceptions are addressed (things rolling downhill have gravity acting; wind has solar heating producing pressure differences). The Earth's continued orbit is used as evidence: in the absence of friction (space is frictionless), motion persists. Inertia is added to the list of basic properties of matter alongside particulate nature, occupying space, and weight. Part 2 (Relating Inertia to Energy) connects inertia to the BFSU energy framework: "movement energy" is put into objects by force, contained in moving objects, removed by counter-force or friction. A careful NOTE at the end distinguishes inertia from friction.

Practices: 64.3% (amber tier). Three of seven NGSS practices are PRESENT, three are PARTIAL, one is ABSENT. Hands-on demos and games are substantial: ball-in-tray jerk, ice-cube-on-cookie-sheet, bombardier game, paper-yank trick. Q&A and Think Time are extensive. Mathematics is ABSENT - no quantitative analysis of force, mass, or acceleration. Argument from evidence is partial because students are guided toward predetermined conclusions.

What Would Change This Verdict

The inertia content in Part 1 would not need to change. The energy framing in Part 2 would need to be rewritten - the substance-model language ("movement energy is there in the object," "movement energy is removed by friction") would need to be replaced with atomic-molecular mechanism. For example, "movement energy is there in it" could be reframed as a description of what the atoms in the moving object are actually doing. The friction passages would need the same treatment. These are passage-level rewrites but would require the atomic anchor to be available, which the BFSU progression does not provide.

The Earth-orbit-evidence argument is a beautiful K-2 application of inferential reasoning. The author's explicit warning against confusing friction with inertia in measurement is a real pedagogical contribution.

Depth Classification

shallow by default (within shallow-by-design progression) - Lesson C-5 itself does not contain explicit MISCONCEPTION_BY_DESIGN flags. The substance framing of energy is inherited from C-1 and C-3 and applied in Part 2 without being re-argued. The lesson's own contribution - the inertia content in Part 1 - is descriptively correct. For the broader BFSU energy progression considered together, the label is shallow by design: the author's C-1 thesis ("there is no way of defining or understanding energy beyond recognizing it as heat, light, electricity, or motion") is structural across the entire C-progression.
